How many crowd links do you need?

There is no universal number. But there is a practical way to estimate a volume that makes sense for your site and your market.

“How many crowd links should I buy?” has no single answer that fits every site. The right volume depends on your niche, your competitors and the links you already have. Here is a practical way to work it out.

1. Look at competitors’ referring domains

Open a backlink tool such as Ahrefs, Semrush or Majestic and check the sites that rank in the top results for your main keywords. Note how many referring domains each one has — the number of different websites linking to them, not the total number of links. The gap between you and the sites you want to compete with is your first benchmark.

2. Check what share of their links are mentions

Look through competitors’ backlinks and see how many come from forums, Q&A sites and communities. If they have a noticeable layer of such links, crowd links are a natural way to close part of the gap. If almost all of their links come from articles, crowd links will be one part of the plan, not the whole plan.

3. Look at your own profile

  • How many referring domains do you already have?
  • Which anchors dominate? If keyword anchors already make up a large share, new crowd links should lean towards brand and URL anchors.
  • How fast have you been gaining links so far?

4. Choose a pace, not just a total

A total target is less important than how fast you get there. Links that appear gradually look closer to how real sites gain mentions than hundreds of links in one week. A common approach is to split the total into monthly batches and keep the pace steady.

5. Spread links across pages

Pointing every link at the homepage looks unnatural for most sites. Spread crowd links across the homepage, category pages and useful content pages — the kind of pages people would actually recommend in a discussion.

A simple example

Say competitors in your niche have 300–400 referring domains and you have 80. Closing the gap with crowd links alone is not the goal; instead you might plan 50–100 crowd links per month for several months, alongside other link types, and review rankings and referring domains each month.

Plan the budget

Once you know the monthly volume, the price calculator shows the cost. The price per link drops at 50, 100, 200 and 500 links, and from 1000 links we agree special terms. For a full picture of risk and pace, see are crowd links safe.
